Intent

At St John’s Catholic Primary School, we ensure that all children have access to a bespoke, planned, progressive physical education programme, which places a real emphasis on developing thinking, social and healthy skills through physical activity. Through the Physical Education curriculum, we aim to develop a passion for participation and enjoyment in sport and physical activity and a lifelong focus on leading a healthy, active lifestyle. We want every child at St John’s to be the best they can be.

Implementation

Our physical education curriculum is carefully planned to include a range of indoor and outdoor based lessons throughout the year and provides a varied, progressive learning programme. All children will receive 120 minutes of engaging, high quality and enjoyable physical education lessons per week Appropriate provision is in place to support a range of learning needs and abilities and ensure positive outcomes for all children.

To complement our Physical Education programme, we also provide access to an extensive enrichment programme. This programme is available before school, at lunchtime and after school. At St John’s we aim to ensure that all children are physically active to exceed the Chief Medical Officer’s recommendations each and every day. Our lunchtime programme includes an extensive variety of activities such as cheerleading, lacrosse, gymnastics and tri golf. Our carefully selected enrichment club providers are hugely skilled and extensively qualified and complement our school curriculum. Activities offered are yoga, football, dodgeball, cricket and tag rugby, with sessions on offer to all children in Reception to year 6.

We aim to give all children the opportunity to experience competitive sport by planning and participating in regular intra and inter school experiences. We provide these opportunities for a variety of reasons, some for participation and inspiration some for the high level of competitive standards. We are passionate that all children have the opportunity to participate, and as such, offer inclusion sport competitions at all levels.

Impact

Physical Education is taught as a basis for lifelong learning, where the children have access to a wide range of activities in the belief that if taught well and the children are allowed to succeed, then they will continue to have a physically active life. A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all children to succeed and excel in a variety of competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. At St John’s, we provide opportunities for children to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to participate and compete builds character and helps to develop and embed our St John’s school values. Through positive Physical Education experiences our children grow and develop their skills for life.
