Religious Education

The St John's Way

A Catholic primary school we are guided by the new RED as not only a place of academic formation but a sacred space of encounter, transformation, and mission. Every child is encouraged to grow in knowledge, faith, and love, so they may live lives of purpose and service, grounded in the example of Christ. In this way, our school is a living Gospel, a visible sign of God's Kingdom in the world today.

A Curriculum for Life

Under the new RED, Religious Education is structured to be rigorous, coherent and evangelising. It forms the “core of the core curriculum” where pupils are offered a systematic and engaging programme of study from nursery to Year 6, enabling them to encounter the richness of the Catholic faith, deepen their understanding of scripture and explore moral and ethical dimensions of life in a reflective and respectful way.

We help children:

  • Understand what Catholics believe and why.
  • Appreciate the relevance of faith to their own lives and the world today.
  • Learn about other religions and worldviews with openness and respect, promoting dialogue and tolerance.

Missionary Discipleship and Catholic Social Teaching

At St John's we not only focus on the formation of pupils but for their transformation as missionary disciples. Inspired by Pope Francis' call to be a “Church that goes forth,” we actively engage pupils in living out the Church’s mission in the world.

This includes:

  • Embedding Catholic Social Teaching through curriculum and charitable outreach
  • Encouraging acts of justice, stewardship, and compassion
  • Promoting a culture of inclusion, dignity, and service
  • Forming pupils who are active citizens, rooted in faith and committed to the common good

As Catholics, we understand the Bible to be the written Word of God. Scripture is at the centre of everything the Church does. The Word of God shapes our prayer and worship. If you would like to learn more about scripture, we have a range of resources for you to use below.
