DEBATE MATES

Our debate team is made up of enthusiastic and thoughtful pupils from Years 5 and 6, with Year 4 joining in the Summer Term (2). We meet every Friday morning at 8am — and everyone is welcome!

We choose debate topics that spark curiosity and interest among the children, while also tackling important moral and social issues. Our discussions are guided by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, our school mission statement, and current affairs from trusted news sources such as Newsround and First News. This helps our pupils form opinions based on facts and up-to-date information.

We explore a wide range of themes — from ethical dilemmas to global challenges — and regularly hold show debates for parents. We also encourage pupils to think deeply about the big issues of the day.

Last year, our team was proud to be invited to present at the Manchester Safeguarding Board Conference, where we debated the topic of Artificial Intelligence (AI). As part of this, we even helped organise teacher and parent training sessions through Smoothwall.

Our debate team is a space where children learn to listen, reason, and speak with confidence — all while having fun and engaging with the world around them.
