MEDICAL NEEDS and MEDICATION

HOW WE MANAGE MEDICAL NEEDS IN SCHOOL

If your child has a medical condition, allergy or any change to their medical needs, please contact the school office as soon as possible on 0161 881 1040 or email admin@stjohnsrc.net.

  • For new, ongoing or more complex medical needs, we may ask you to provide further information from your child’s healthcare professional so that we can make appropriate arrangements in school.

  • In line with Department for Education guidance, some children will require an Individual Healthcare Plan (IHP), developed with parents/carers and, where appropriate, healthcare professionals, to ensure that staff understand the support required and what action should be taken.

  • Parents and carers are responsible for ensuring that the school is informed of any changes to their child’s medical needs and that all medication held in school is in date, clearly labelled and supplied in accordance with the school’s procedures. Please let us know immediately if medication, dosage or medical advice changes. The school follows statutory Department for Education guidance for supporting pupils with medical conditions and the current statutory guidance on allergy safety in schools.

WORKING TOGETHER TO SUPPORT MEDICAL NEEDS

Supporting children with medical needs is a partnership between families, school staff and healthcare professionals. The table below explains who is responsible for each part of the process so that information is kept up to date and children receive the support they need in school.

ALLERGY AWARENESS

  • Following the introduction of Benedict’s Law and updated national guidance, we have strengthened our procedures and introduced a new Allergy and Medical Needs Policy.

  • This explains how we work with families and healthcare professionals, share important information with staff, manage medication and emergency care, and reduce risks during the school day, trips, clubs and special events.

  • The most important part of this is good communication between home and school, so please keep us informed of any changes to your child’s medical needs.

Our allergy lead is Ms Vechionne (SENDCO) but please contact the office with any issues and these will be passed on.
