CSI - RE Curriculum
'CORE OF THE CORE'
"Leaders and governors... ensure that religious education is the 'core of the core', prioritising it within the curriculum through planning and strategic resourcing."

"Leaders and governors... ensure that religious education is the 'core of the core', prioritising it within the curriculum through planning and strategic resourcing."
The RED Framework was implemented a year ahead of the diocesan schedule, moving from pilot programmes in Years 1 and 5 to a fully embedded curriculum across the school rooted in To Know You More Clearly
In EYFS and KS1, the Lighting the Path scheme provides the foundation, ensuring a coherent and progressive journey of faith
Teachers in Years 1 and 5 engaged with RED pilot materials during 2024/25, developing confidence and expertise ahead of full implementation.
Governors have engaged with updates on the RED Framework and ensured Early Career Teachers accessed diocesan induction so that RE is delivered confidently and consistently from the outset
CSED explicitly states that RE is "afforded the same status as other core subjects and is given generous time, resources, and strategic attention"
RE is allocated 10% of total curriculum time across every year group from Nursery to Year 6
DATA DURING INSPECTION
The inspector spent one hour with the RE leader examining assessment data in depth, using the diocesan Insight tool as the primary reference point
Data was interrogated comparatively, with RE outcomes set directly alongside English attainment to demonstrate parity and in some cases superiority
This comparative analysis formed a key part of triangulation, cross-referencing data against book scrutiny to test the accuracy and validity of judgements
Books were not selected at random — children were chosen on the basis of specific characteristics, allowing the inspector to track whether attainment data reflected the experience of different groups of pupils
The session involved very close focus on individual pupil outcomes, with the RE leader given the opportunity to share specific examples that substantiated what the data was showing
Examples of assessed pieces of work were presented alongside the data point they had generated, making the connection between evidence and judgement explicit and transparent
RED & LIGHTING THE PATH
"The Religious Education Directory is implemented and underpins teaching, learning, and assessment, ensuring a well-sequenced curriculum..."
EYFS
"Children in the early years benefit from a purposeful introduction to religious education showing an emerging religious literacy." CSI report, 2026
We utilise the Lighting the Path scheme and take a creative approach by building RE into continuous provision rather than treating it as an "add on"
PLANNING
"Lessons build on prior knowledge, helping pupils make links across topics, resulting in progress that often exceeds other curriculum areas."
ASSESSMENT
A whole-school Curriculum Map combines all year groups, giving teachers a clear overview of the progression of knowledge and skills across the RE curriculum
Teachers carry out an initial assessment of prior knowledge at the start of every unit, ensuring planning responds to where pupils actually are rather than where they are assumed to be
Regular recapping is built into lesson structure across all subjects, ensuring knowledge is sustained over time rather than taught and forgotten
Monitoring is maintained through regular book scrutiny, giving leaders an ongoing picture of standards and progression
Assessment draws on a range of approaches including deep discussion, roleplay, and written work, reflecting the varied ways pupils demonstrate understanding in RE
Written feedback routinely includes follow-up questions that move pupils forward, making next steps explicit and personal to each learner
Each unit concludes with an end of unit assessment task for every year group, providing a consistent summative checkpoint
Books contain visible examples of teacher feedback, demonstrating the connection between assessment and teaching response in practice
"Assessment in religious education is purposeful... identifying pupils’ understanding and next steps in learning... used to adapt teaching." CSI report, 2026
MODERATION
"Leaders monitor and evaluate provision through lesson observations, work scrutiny, analysis of assessment data, and pupil voice."
"Moderation within school supports accurate assessment. Consequently, pupils achieve well in religious education."
We maintain a rigorous cycle led by the RE Lead and senior leaders, focusing on high standards and the use of precise theological vocabulary.
Staff engage in collaborative moderation and professional dialogue during dedicated meeting times to ensure assessment judgments are consistent across year groups.
