Pupil Premium
WHAT IS PUPIL PREMIUM?
The Pupil Premium is additional funding provided by the government to help schools improve educational outcomes for pupils who may face disadvantage. This includes children who are, or have been, eligible for Free School Meals within the last six years, as well as Looked After and previously Looked After children. The aim of this funding is to ensure that these pupils receive the targeted support they need to thrive and to help close the attainment gap between them and their peers..pdf)
At St John’s, we have high aspirations for every child. We believe firmly that no child should be left behind, and we are committed to ensuring that all pupils—regardless of background—are given every opportunity to achieve their full potential. Our Pupil Premium strategy aligns closely with our whole‑school development priorities and reflects our belief in evidence‑informed, high‑quality teaching.
OUR APPROACH
Using a detailed understanding of our pupils’ needs, we have identified key barriers to learning that can affect disadvantaged learners. These include lower starting points in language and communication, confidence and wellbeing challenges, attendance concerns, and complex family circumstances. Our strategy is shaped around addressing these barriers effectively
We base our decisions on robust assessments, professional expertise, and research‑driven guidance from sources such as the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF). Interventions and approaches are carefully selected and regularly reviewed for impact.
HOW WE USE OUR PUPIL PREMIUM FUNDING
At St John’s, Pupil Premium funding is directed towards provision that makes the greatest difference for our disadvantaged learners. This includes:
High‑quality teaching in every classroom, supported by targeted CPD and a strong whole‑school ethos of achievement for all.
Tailored academic interventions, including small‑group work, precision teaching, targeted support in English and Maths, and specialist provision such as dyslexia teaching.
Support for emotional wellbeing and behaviour, delivered by our experienced Pastoral Manager, including bespoke support for individual pupils and families.
Improving attendance and punctuality through close monitoring, early intervention, and family support, recognising the strong link between attendance and progress.
Wider opportunities and enrichment, ensuring that all disadvantaged pupils can develop cultural capital, build aspirations, and access the full life of the school—clubs, trips, leadership roles, and more.
OUR COMMITMENT
St John’s is dedicated to ensuring that all Pupil Premium pupils benefit fully from the funding available. Through high‑quality teaching, strong relationships, and a rich curriculum, we work to ensure every child feels valued, supported, and able to succeed.
