Learning About Our Patron Saint – St John the Evangelist

St John the Evangelist is the patron saint of our school.

WHO WAS HE?

St John was one of Jesus’ closest friends. Along with his brother James, he was known as one of the “Sons of Thunder,” and he is often remembered as the disciple who sat right beside Jesus at the Last Supper. Jesus trusted him deeply, and the Gospels tell us that St John was especially beloved by Him.

St John was also a fisherman when Jesus first called him to be one of the “fishers of men.” Through his writings—especially the Gospel of John—we can discover how he wants us to understand Jesus: as the light of the world, the Good Shepherd, and the source of true love.

One of St John’s most famous symbols is the eagle, which represents the soaring beauty and depth of his Gospel.

The children in our after‑school art club, guided by Claire Law, have created stunning artwork inspired by this symbol and by stories from St John’s life.

Although his official feast day is 27th December, we celebrate our patron saint as a school community each January, when we gather once again to reflect on his message of faith, hope, and love.

As we honour St John the Evangelist, we pray:

St John the Evangelist,

Guide us to follow Jesus with open hearts,
To speak truth with courage,
To serve others with love,
And to be lights of hope in our school and our world.

Amen.

“Let us love one another: for love is of God.”
— St John the Evangelist (1 John 4:7)
